Tracing Water, 2021
17x9 feet
Tap water,Chinese ink, mulberry paper, air, water-time; backed with cheese cloth and wheat paste
An excerpt:
Water constantly transforms, absorbs, connects and reconnects. Water enters us and embodies us. When we think of a body of water, we can almost hear its motion and feel its presence. Like thinking of a waterfall washing over us and feeling the rush or sudden coldness, or thinking of a stream and hearing it weeping or whispering and feeling the silence. I often imagine the ocean, and what I hear and feel is boundless. From wild, to calm, to joy, and to just plain uncertainty.
I grew up surrounded by seas, mangroves and ocean.Today these lagoons and mangroves are drowning, and the ocean is swelling. With higher temperatures, the ocean levels rising represent an existential threat to my home. Tracing water portrays water as a conscious medium, reacting and responding to its environment. From drought and scarcity, to flooding and thermal expansion; from reflections and caustics, to how it magnifies and distorts things, it water acting, reacting and responding.
